Title: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time
Author: Mark Haddon
The 15-year-old boy, Christopher Boone, found a dog, Wellington, which had been killed by a garden fork in front of Mrs. Shears’s house, who is the owner of dog. Christopher is very good at math and logic. He planned to investigate this murder, and record his experiences in the book but was banned by his father, Ed, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. During his investigation, Siobhan who is not only the teacher but the best friend of Christopher has given him a great deal of suggestions. At the same time, Christopher found another thing casually which changed and hurt him dramatically.
It is interesting that the author used only prime numbers to number his chapters such as 3, 5 and 7, this reflected to Christopher’s mathematical interests. In addition, most sentences in the book are short, clear and direct; even the author repeated the same subject and verb many times in one paragraph that is rare in normal novels. However, these are successful techniques to represent a young little boy. To show Christopher’s personality, the author also put graphs, bold words and formulas to express his high understanding, meanwhile, these help the readers to realize easily and impress deeply.
The book is written in the first person narrative of Christopher. No matter what language or detective points that Mark Haddon used are clear to understand, because in this book I become a 15-year-old boy. To follow the plot full of twists, I am often surprised at the pattern of Christopher’s thinking. This is a hugely attractive novel and worth reading.
很有趣的一本書,單字不會太難,推薦給想看英文小說的你!!
